Gtf gene of streptococcus mutans in presence of lactobacillus acidophilus

Objectives: Measure levels of expression of gtf genes, ftf and spaP in the presence of glucose and Lactobacillus acidophillus.

Methods: A comparison of 3 different genes of Streptococcus mutans adherence; gtf, ftf and spaP in the presence of Lactobacillus Acidpohillus in Brain Heart Infusion medium supplemented with 40% glucose. Bacteria were added L. acidophilus and S. mutans to the media at ratios 1:1, 1:10 and 10:1 respectively. To remove the RNA solution using phenol  and guanidine thiocyanate. After removing the genetic material proceeded to pass it with a positive control cDNA using primers with reference house keeping gene GAPDH for analysis. qPCR was subsequently made.

Results: Expression of gtf gene was observed in the condition 10:1 (Lactobacillus acidophilus, S. mutans) and 1:10 (S. mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus).

Conclusions: Genes of adherence of S. mutans is affected in the presence of L. acidophillus due to competition between these two bacteria. The L. acidophillus, may be a mediator in the development of caries, since it acidifies the medium and thereby eliminates or reduces the expression of some genes of adhesion and virulence of S. mutans, no ftf gene expression and spaP by static medium was handled.
