Method: This was a survey of 150 dentists randomly selected. The subjects answered a questionnaire with 20 questions and participants were asked about specific complications of this desease and the dental management of diabetic patients.
Result: The obtained results were disturbing, since 34% of the volunteers affirmed they never measure the glucose levels of their patients; 47.1% have the glycosimeter but they only use in cases of urgency. 15.3% considered that the fasting glucose level of 120mg/dl or less was ideal for dental treatment. 45.6% of the professionals use local anesthetic without vasoconstrictor and 46.3% use felypressin as vasoconstrictor, but when asked about the number of cartridges 63,7% use the same dose as healthy patients. When questioned about anti-inflammatory drugs, 51.7% use dexamethasone as first choice, 45.3% stated that they prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory. In addition, 3,7% of dentists said they always prescribe profilatic antibiotic for patients with diabetes, and 5.9% believe that increasing the time of prescription of antibiotics is important for diabetic patients.
Conclusion: It was concluded that dentists are not properly prepared to provide assistance to diabetic patients and deal with the consequences that may occur during their care in the dental office.
