Sex Determination Using Canines and Central Incisors

Objectives: To establish the sex determination method from the width of canines and central incisors using binary logistic regression

Methods: Three hundred and fifty Thai subjects, 179 females and 171 males, with age over 18 years old were included in this study. All of the subjects have fully erupted four canines and four central incisors without dental caries or filling. The mesiodistal width of eight teeth were measured. The subjects were divided into two parts. Part I, 250 subjects, 129 females and 121 males, were recruited for establishing the sex determination tool. The equation was established by the mesiodistal width of eight teeth using binary logistic regression and enter method for variables selection. Part II, the sex determination equation from part I was tested for the accuracy using other 100 subjects, 50 females and 50 males.

Results: Only the mesiodistal width of four teeth, upper right central incisor, upper left canine, lower right canine and lower left canine, were included in the sex determination equation with Cox and Snell R square 0.270. The result from the accuracy test for the new sex determination equation showed 90% correct prediction.

Conclusions: The new sex determination equation from four teeth, upper right central incisor, upper left canine, lower right canine and lower left canine, can be another tool to determine sex.
