Reproducibility and Accuracy of Measuring Results of VITA Easyshade Advance

Objectives: Electronic devices for color determination have become more popular in dental practice. However, it is questionable whether these devices are user-dependent.
Aim:
The aim of this study was to examine, whether the above-mentioned dependencies are verifiable.

Methods: Thirty-nine students (24 female/15 male with a mean age of 25 years) from the dental schools of Berlin, Leipzig, Greifswald, Dresden and Olomouc participated in this test as operators.
After a short introduction into the handling of the electronic color measuring device (VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0) the participants determined the tooth color of the teeth 21 and 15 (FDI position) in one patient. Results were given by the device on two different color shades (VITAPAN classical and VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER), furthermore the L, a, b, and c, h values were recorded. After 4 hours the procedure was repeated by the same operators. Lab-values of both measuring procedures were evaluated by descriptive statistics.

Results: The statistical description of the results, comparing both teeth, did not show any statistically significant differences with a median of 2.35, a standard deviation of 2.53, and a 95 % confidence interval of 0.845 for tooth 21. In tooth 15 the median was 3.27, a standard deviation of 2.76, a 95% confidence interval of 0.92.
The same applies to the assessment of the single teeth 21 and 15, as well as the comparison of the single teeth in the mornings and in the afternoons. Solely at tooth 15 a slightly higher variation can be observed, which is not significant. This scattering may be explained by the more difficult access to the second premolar.

Conclusions: The used color measuring device does not require any prior experience. The measuring results show a very good reproducibility which is operator independent.
